You can eat fresh lobster on the beach and you can have fancy smoothie bowls in the cafes, but if you ask any backpacker, expat, or local where the best food in Mirissa is, they will all point you to the same place.
It’s not a 5-star hotel. It’s a humble, open-air garden kitchen tucked away in the backstreets.
Dewmini Roti Shop has become a legend on the south coast. It started as a small cart and has grown into a bustling garden restaurant solely on the power of word-of-mouth. Why? Because they make the fluffiest, most stuffed, and arguably the most addictive Roti in the country. If you only have one cheap eat in Mirissa, this has to be it.

Finding the Hidden Garden
Part of the charm is that you have to work a little bit to find it. Dewmini isn't on the noisy main Matara road. It is located down a quiet residential lane (Udupila Road) surrounded by fruit trees.
You will see signs pointing the way literally painted on walls and wooden arrows. When you arrive, it feels like you are walking into someone’s backyard, because you are. The tables are set up under a canopy of trees, and you can often see the family cooking in the open kitchen. It is relaxed, unpretentious, and instantly welcoming.

The Savory: Avocado & Cheese Heaven
Sri Lankan "Short Eats" are famous, but the Roti here is next level. The menu is massive, but there is one savory dish that reigns supreme: The Avocado, Cheese, and Tomato Roti.
They don't skimp on the filling. We are talking about generous chunks of ripe, creamy avocado and a mountain of cheese melted inside a hot, crispy flatbread. It comes with a side of spicy sambal that cuts through the richness perfectly.
If you are hungry, the "Kottu Roti" (chopped roti stir-fry) here is also excellent and less oily than what you get at the roadside stalls. The Chicken Cheese Kottu is a heavy hitter that will keep you full for hours.

The Sweet: Death by Chocolate
Now, for the main event. You cannot leave Dewmini without ordering dessert.
The Chocolate Banana Roti is the classic. It’s warm, gooey, and covered in a generous drizzle of chocolate sauce. But if you really want to challenge your blood sugar levels, try the Roti with Ice Cream and Chocolate. The contrast between the hot, crispy roti and the cold vanilla ice cream is perfection.
Warning: The portions are big. If you have just smashed a savory kottu, you might want to split a dessert roti with a friend. Or not. We won't judge.
The Dewmini Family
What makes this place special is the story. It is run by a lovely local family (the owners, Gayani and her husband, are often around). They started with nothing and built this business through hard work and consistent quality.
They are famously friendly. Even when the place is packed and the kitchen is slammed, they usually manage to find you a table and greet you with a smile. They also offer cooking classes if you want to learn how to flip the perfect roti yourself!

The Realistic Stuff: Wait Times
Because this place is no longer a secret, it gets busy. Really busy.
If you go between 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM, expect to wait for a table, and expect the food to take a little while. Everything is made fresh to order they aren't reheating old food.
The Strategy: Go for a late lunch around 2:00 PM or an early dinner around 6:00 PM to beat the rush.
Price: It is slightly more expensive than a street cart, but still incredibly cheap by tourist standards. A full meal with a drink will cost you a fraction of what you pay at the beach bars.
Dewmini Roti Shop proves that you don't need ocean views to be the most popular restaurant in town. You just need really, really good chocolate.
